Previs
Previsualization, or “previz,” is the process of planning scenes before filming or creating them. It involves using simple drawings, 3D models, or animations to visualize how a scene will look, including camera angles, movement, lighting, and action. This helps directors and production teams make creative and practical decisions early, saving time and money during actual production. It’s commonly used in movies, animation, and video games to bring ideas to life before the real work begins.
Postvis
Postvis, short for postvisualization, is the process of adding rough visual effects or animations to filmed footage after it’s been shot but before the final effects are completed. It helps filmmakers see how scenes will look with CGI, explosions, creatures, or other effects, so they can edit the movie more effectively and plan any needed changes. Postvis is often used in action or fantasy films to give a preview of how the finished scene will feel, even though the final visual effects aren’t done yet.
Techvis
Techvis, short for technical visualization, is the process of creating detailed visual plans that show how a scene will be physically filmed. It uses measurements, 3D models, and camera data to figure out things like where to place cameras, how to move them, and how much space is needed on set. Techvis helps the crew understand the technical side of a shot—making sure the creative vision is actually possible to shoot with the equipment and space available. It’s especially useful for complex scenes involving stunts, special effects, or motion control.
Pitchvis
Pitchvis, or pitch visualization, is the process of creating short animated or visual sequences to help sell an idea for a movie, show, or project before it gets approved. It’s like a mini demo or trailer that shows what the final product could look and feel like. Pitchvis helps filmmakers and creators communicate their vision to studios, investors, or producers in a more exciting and convincing way than just using scripts or storyboards. It’s often used to pitch new projects or get support for big, creative ideas.
VisDev
Visdev, short for visual development, is the process of creating the overall look and style of a project before production begins. It includes designing characters, environments, props, lighting, and color palettes to help shape the visual tone and mood. Artists use visdev to explore different ideas and make sure everything fits the story’s world. It’s a key part of animated films, video games, and even live-action movies, helping the whole team stay visually consistent and inspired throughout the project.
Virtual VFX Supervision
A VFX Supervisor is the person in charge of overseeing all the visual effects (VFX) in a movie, TV show, or other project. They work closely with the director to understand the creative vision and lead the team that designs and creates the effects—like explosions, creatures, or digital environments. They also help plan how scenes are shot to make it easier and more effective to add VFX later. In many cases, a VFX Supervisor can also act as a virtual consultant, offering remote guidance and technical advice during pre-production and post-production. This helps filmmakers make smart decisions early on, avoid costly reshoots, and keep the project on budget while still delivering high-quality results.
